There are things in this world that cannot be hurried into strength.
A seedling needs shelter before it can withstand the weather. A flame needs cupped hands around it before it can hold its own against the wind. A child needs time before the whole weight of the world should be allowed to enter.
Rudolf Steiner spoke of a protective gesture within the soul of the educator: a way of holding the child so that she may grow gradually into the outer world rather than being drawn into it too quickly.
This is the deeper gesture of the Protector.
Protection is not possession.
It is not keeping life from happening.
It is recognizing what is still becoming and creating the conditions in which it can become fully itself.
There is something here for the inner life, too.
Not everything emerging within us is ready to be exposed.
A new direction. A conviction still finding its language. A creative work in its earliest form. A boundary we are only beginning to hold. A self we have glimpsed but do not yet know how to inhabit.
We can bring these things into the world too quickly.
We can ask for opinions before we know what we think. Explain what we are becoming before we have lived it. Expose the tender beginning to voices strong enough to shape it before it has found its own form.
Sometimes the work of The Alchemical Path is not to push something forward.
It is to protect the conditions of its becoming.
The Stillpoint can become such a place. A quiet interior ground where what is emerging does not yet have to perform, defend itself, produce an answer, or become useful.
Eventually, true protection releases what it has sheltered.
The hands around the flame must open.
The child grows toward the world.
What has become strong enough within us must finally be lived.
The Protector does not build a wall around life.
The Protector stands beside what is becoming until it can stand on its own.
Perhaps this is the question the Protector leaves with us:
What in my life is asking to be protected long enough to become fully itself?
