The Shoemaker: What Is Truly Yours to Will?

The Shoemaker makes shoes for walking.

There is something beautifully earthly in this work. Leather is measured, cut, shaped, stitched, and joined to the sole. What emerges is made for movement—for the meeting of the human being with the road beneath her feet.

Perhaps this is the deeper gesture of the Shoemaker.

We are here to walk a life.

Yet much of what directs us did not originate within us. We inherit expectations about what a good life should look like. We learn which choices bring approval, security, belonging, or recognition. We follow paths laid down by family, culture, circumstance, fear, and sometimes by earlier versions of ourselves.

A path can look entirely right from the outside and still not be ours.

Rudolf Steiner writes in The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity:

An action is felt to be free insofar as the reason for it springs from the ideal part of my individual being.

There is a profound distinction here.

The question is not simply, What do I want?

Desire can pull us in many directions. Neither is the question, What am I supposed to do?

The deeper question is:

What is truly mine to will?

This requires discernment.

Beneath expectation, habit, fear, obligation, and the desire to be understood, there is a quieter individuality. It does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes we recognize it only because a direction continues to return. Something remains quietly alive despite all our attempts to reason it away.

This is where the Shoemaker meets The Alchemical Path.

The Stillpoint gives us somewhere to listen before choosing the next step. Not for the loudest desire, nor for the safest road, but for the direction that arises from somewhere more essential within us.

We may discover that a path we have faithfully walked has completed its work. Or that the road we kept trying to leave is actually ours. Sometimes the next true step changes everything. Sometimes it looks remarkably ordinary.

The Shoemaker cannot walk the road for us.

She can only remind us that these are our feet upon the earth, and this is our life being walked.

Perhaps her question is the one worth carrying:

Beneath everything I have been taught to want, what is truly mine to will?
